A disorder of the sebaceous glands that presents a variety of lesions; comedones, pustules, papules, cysts and
nodules on the face, chest and back. These lesions are classified as Acne Grades l, ll, lll & lV to identify their type as
mild moderate or severe for appropriate treatment. Acne occurs as a result of excessive sebum (oil) production mixing
with keratinized (dead) cells in the philosebaceous unit (hair follicle). This creates a microplug or intracellular adhesion
called a comedone. Comedones are classified as Acne Grade l or blackheads and pimples and are a worm like mass of
keratinized cells and sebum appearing most frequently on the face but can appear on others parts of the body. Sometimes
blackheads are accompanied by pimples and most often afflict males and females near puberty, but may persist well beyond
teen years. The small pore closed comedone is the precursor of inflammatory acne papules, pustules, and cysts.
